Naming Tradition from South Korea

Do you like watching Korean dramas or Kpop? Yes, when I was one year ago, I liked watching Korean dramas and liked Kpop too, especially EXO, and my bias (idol) at that time is Do KyungSoo (aaaahh he always look so cute).

But for now, I can no longer like that again. But even so, I still like South Korea, especially from the places that are very beautiful in there, South Korean’s culture, etc. But, in this season I wanna share you about what I know and what I read about naming in South Korea.

As we know, the names of Koreans still hold the clan tightly. Koreans have normally three syllables in their names, which are again parted into two: the last name a.k.a. surname and the first name. The order of Korean names is “surname (clan)-first name,” and their surnames are normally one syllable, so their first names are normally two syllables.

For example, 변백현 (Byun BaekHyun) is composed of the surname is 변 (Byun) one syllable and the first name is 백현 (BaekHyun) two syllable. If their surname is one syllable, then they have most likely three-syllabled names, and if their surname is two syllables, then they likely have three to four-syllabled names.

Korean women who were married, their names did not change following the husband's surname, but remained the same as the original name from the parents. For example, Goo Hye-sun and Ahn Jae-hyun, they are a married couple. Ahn Jaehyun despite being married, she can't be called Mrs. Goo, but she still called Mrs. Ahn.

In Korea there are more than 100 clan names. The biggest clans are 이 (Lee), 김 (Kim), and 박 (Park) which cover almost half of the population.
